Congratulations to Catapotamus, who dashed out to an early lead and never looked back at the herd of cats following him. His owner explains his method thus:

When the red dot is at or near the top end (position 1) or the bottom end (position 24) there is higher scoring potential for the next match compared to when the red dot is at or near the middle (positions 12 and 13.) For example, if the red dot is at position 1 or 24 the maximum possible score for the next match is 23, if the red dot is at position 2 or 23 the maximum possible score for the next match is 22, and so on, down to when the red dot is at position 12 or 13 (the middle) where the maximum possible score for the next match is 12. To capitalize on scoring potential as much as possible I put the best teams at or near the ends and the worst teams at or near the middle. I don't know much about women's football so I looked up the bookmaker odds for each country to win the cup and ranked the teams accordingly. To improve my chances of a good start I looked at the first few scheduled matches and arranged the teams so that, match by match, the teams more likely to win their match alternated between the top half (positions 1 to 12) and the bottom half (positions 13 to 24). This would get the red dot pinging back and forth between the top half and bottom half. I put contenders France at position 24 because they played in the first game and the red dot started at position 0.

Times indicate the end of each match as recorded at the stadium; all stadiums are in the same time zone (GMT+2).

Fluffy and dependable King Louie entered the contest June 3, 2019, at 12:54 PM.
King Louie mostly spends his days ruling the kingdom from his regal throne also known as the green recliner. But he never misses an opportunity to do a few laps chasing the illusive red dot. He thinks the contest theme is perfect as the odds of King Louie capturing a victory are about the same as him actually capturing the red dot.

Wild and sly L'Anti-Dôt entered the contest June 6, 2019, at 11:59 PM.
I am the French crime-fighting cat and chief inspector of La Boucherie. My arch enemy is Le Dôt Rouge. This malefactor has been seen capering across floors, walls, furniture, and even les pantalons! Sacré bleu! In the daytime he hides, and I conserve my strength, napping yet ever alert to movement. At night he emerges; the sight of him is my signal to go. Sometimes I call him the Go Dôt. Oh, you were waiting for that one, n'est-ce pas? So far the rapscallion has eluded me, although many times I have nearly had him in my grasp. One day I will catch you, my crimson foe, and when I catch you I will eat you. Excusez-moi, I mean arrest you. I look forward to this day with relish. Or maybe catsup. À bientôt!
L'Anti-Dôt is also an agent of Laughton.org and ineligible to receive a prize.

Laser pointers were invented to amuse cats, or more accurately, to amuse cat owners. If you've never zig-zagged a red dot across a floor and watched a cat chase it, you are missing one of the true joys of modern technology. This contest lets a player zig-zag a virtual laser across a hypothetical floor while a simulated cat - your very own Laser Cat - chases it. The player whose Laser Cat moves the fastest is the winner!

This is a fantasy sports competition based on the 2019 Women's World Cup tournament in France. Competition begins June 7, and the championship game will be held on July 7. As in all contests at Laughton.org, instead of simply predicting winners, participants engage in a little mental prestidigitation by constructing an otherwise meaningless list to utilize an arbitrary and capricious scoring formula devised by the contest staff whose minds tend to wander when they see a silly cat video like the one at right provided by GIPHY.com. Just look at that wacky cat go! Oh, sorry, back to the contest. In this competition we're being even more arbitrary and capricious than ever before: scores not only depend on the results of each match but also on the order in which the matches are played, so you'll want to familiarize yourself with both the team rankings and the tournament schedule before crafting your entry.

Use the Official Entry Form below to enter the contest. Your entry is an ordered list of 24 countries chosen from those participating in the Women's World Cup tournament. You may use all 24 participating countries, but once you see the byzantine scoring formula, you'll probably want to leave a few out and repeat a few others. Your entry also includes a tiebreaker prediction and some identifying information, neither of which should inspire any angst.

As stated above, the key part of your entry is the ordered list of 24 countries. Any country may appear in more than one position. A red laser dot is positioned at the top of the list in position 0. There's no need to provide your own laser; we take care of this.

Each time a Women's World Cup match ends, the red dot moves to the level of the winning country (special scoring rules apply to matches that end in ties). Points are gained depending on the distance the dot moves. If the target country appears more than once in the list, the dot moves to the closest location to the dot's current position. If two eligible entries are equidistant from the laser, it moves up if it is in the lower half of the list, down if it is in the upper half.

Losses have no effect; they do not move the laser and do not alter the score. Ties are scored as follows:

In the example above,

It's possible for the same country to win two matches in a row in the late stages of the tournament. Should this happen, the laser will not move (and add no points) if the victorious country appears only once in the list. If the country appears in two positions, the laser will move from its current position to the other and score points. If the country appears in more than two positions, the laser will move to one of the others according to the movement rules above.

Matches will be scored in the order that they finish. For this reason you'll want to be familiar with the tournament schedule before composing your entry. In the highly unlikely event that two matches end simultaneously, the one that started first will be scored first. In the even-more-highly-unlikely event that two matches begin and end at exactly the same time, the one held in the stadium closer to the Church of Saint Sulpice (Paris, Left Bank) as determined by Google Maps will be scored first. The Laughton.org contest staff tries to think of everything, although it makes our heads hurt sometimes.

After the last match has ended and been scored, the laser dot will drop to position 25 (not shown) and score accordingly.

Your theoretical cat, whose purpose - like that of real cats - is mostly decorative, chases the laser as it moves. You'll have to rely on your imagination and the image at left provided by GIPHY.com for this effect; the Laughton.org contest staff doesn't have any animators who can actually draw such a thing. Assuming that the cat moves the same distance as the laser, points gained indicate how fast it moves during the tournament. The player whose cat moves the fastest is the winner.

The Official Entry Form provides a field to predict the total number of goals that will be scored during the entire Women's World Cup tournament. Only goals scored during regular and overtime play count; shootout goals do not. In the event that multiple players have the same number of points at the end of the competition, the one whose prediction is closest to the correct tally will win. If players are tied after applying the tiebreaker, the winner will be the one whose entry arrived earlier at Laughton.org. Note that if you change your entry and resubmit it, the official arrival time will be the one associated with the revised entry.

The 2015 Women's World Cup saw a total of 146 goals scored. This was the first year that the field was expanded to 24 teams. Previous tournaments allowed a maximum of 16 teams.

The top scorer will receive a Tangoes puzzle game. According to legend, the game is based on an event that occurred thousands of years ago in China: a man broke a porcelain plate, and instead of cleaning up his mess he played with the pieces making odd shapes. Then - according to which version you believe - he was either struck and killed by an oxcart because he was playing in the middle of the road, or he was executed because the plate belonged to the emperor. Not only does the contest staff subscribe to this legend, but we also believe that the Loch Ness Monster beat Sasquatch in the first Tangoes tournament.

Use the Official Entry Form below to submit your entry no later than 11:59pm (US Eastern Time) on June 6, 2019. No late entries will be accepted. Your e-mail address will be the unique identifier for your entry. It will only be used to contact you to confirm acceptance of your entry, to notify you if your entry is rejected, or to contact you regarding prize delivery should you be so lucky skillful. It will not appear anywhere on this website or be used for any other purpose. If you want to change your entry after submitting it, simply submit another using the same address; the new entry will overwrite the previous one as long as it is submitted before the deadline.

Only one entry per e-mail address will be accepted. If you have more than one address, you may submit an entry from each.

The fields for country names are formatted as menus to prevent any misspellings or misunderstandings. Simply click on the country name that you want to select for each position.

In addition to the basic information needed to enter the contest, the Official Entry Form includes a couple of items to guide us in drawing your Laser Cat and an area for freeform text. This area is provided so that you may describe your Laser Cat for the amusement of other players (and the contest staff, who can hardly believe what some players write). Feel free to describe your Laser Cat's country, island, region, city, or town of origin, his/her likes and dislikes, political views, sleeping habits, waking habits (if any), favorite foods, musical preferences, or anything else you suspect/hope/fear that others want to know. Other comments may be included in this area as well, but don't ramble endlessly; at about the 200-word mark the contest staff tends to start cutting. Furthermore, racist, sexist,or otherwise scurrilous comments are prohibited. Laughton.org is a family-friendly site, so we cannot go into detail here about what happens when someone submits offensive comments, but we can assure you that such players do not win contests at Laughton.org.

A roster of players and their entry details will be posted on this page before the Women's World Cup tournament begins on June 7, 2019. Scores and standings will be posted on this page and updated frequently during the tournament. Ordinarily we try to update promptly whenever scores change, but since the ENTIRE LAUGHTON.ORG CONTEST STAFF HAS BEEN SUMMONED TO JURY DUTY during the tournament, it's likely that updates will be posted each day in the evening (US Eastern Time). Only the final tally will count for winning prizes and acquiring the eternal bragging rights associated with victory in a contest at Laughton.org, but intermediate results may confer some fleeting opportunities for one-upmanship at your local pinball parlor, escape room, or cat café.
